CCANW 2012/13 programme: Games People Play

Part I: 6 April – 30 September 2012

Part II: October 2012 – February 2013

Games hold a mirror to civilization; they build bonds, trust and strengthen social relationships. For the Cultural Olympiad, CCANW will explore – through a range of exhibitions and activities that will be participatory and fun - what games can tell us about ‘human nature’; and how a deeper understanding of the advantages of cooperation can help us all to address the needs of the planet at this time.

Indoors, the exhibitions will be presented in two halves. The first will show a selection of remarkable early board games which were intended as guides to moral improvement or general knowledge and documentation of unusual local games, past and present. The second half will focus on photography and video by contemporary artists which use sporting imagery to make some wider comment on life today, and on the new generation of video games designed to address social and environmental challenges. Both halves will include participatory and interactive work including performances of H.G.Wells’ ‘Little Wars’ and Guy Debord’s ‘The Game of War’, and demonstrations of cooperative games of the 70s.

Outside, games will be devised and played in a ‘playground’ area in front of CCANW’s building, along the trails and in the wider forest environment. Five villages surrounding Haldon will be working with The Moveable Feast Workshop Company, inventing new games as well as researching the heritage of local games. Additional activities include Fluxolympics–inspired and Paralympics events and a letterboxing challenge on Haldon similar to that played on Dartmoor. Biodiversity and interdependence will also be explored through activities led by artists and wildlife experts in Haldon Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of birds of prey, Nightjars and 30 species of butterfly.

During 2012, we will also continue to work with local artists, the public and the Forestry Commission on the construction of an earthwork by Alan Sonfist in the forest. We will also hold live music and poetry events with an ecological focus on our outdoor stage.

Our programme in 2013 will revolve around a project relating to the importance of Soil, over which we are collaborating with University College Falmouth.

Our activities continue to develop collaborations and partnerships, with an increasing focus on touring our exhibitions and initiating new curatorial projects with larger arts or environmental venues.
